Why do people react to skincare products?

To discover the source of your negative reaction, you may have to think back to remember the skin care product you just used. The product must be a new or recent one you just purchased. You cannot point at the old product because none triggered any negative response from you before now, so the culprit must be a new addition to your skin routine. To be sure, apply new cream and wait to observe any reaction. In most cases, the reaction is caused by a particular chemical or main ingredient in a moisturizer, serum, etc.

Handling skincare product allergic response

If you are sure your case is an allergic reaction to a certain product, the sensible action is to discontinue the use of that product. The next thing is to book an appointment with your skin doctor or dermatologist. If you can try to register the duration and how many times the symptoms appeared. The idea is to present the record, and if possible, the suspected products to the dermatologist who will assist you in identifying the culprit and provide answers to vital questions.

Contact dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis

When a negative response to a product occurs at the skin level, it is called irritant contact dermatitis. This type is not a real allergic situation because the immune system is not involved, but when the immune system is involved, and the reaction is serious, the condition is called contact dermatitis, and the allergic is real.

In the cases of contact dermatitis, the negative response is usually serious and shows up as intense itching, red, and swollen skin. The condition lasts for 12 hours or 48 hours max. The signs of contact dermatitis include:

Red, itchy, and elevated bumps, in some cases, a little blister filled with liquid may spring up. If you have these indicators, don’t fret because contact dermatitis is usually not a severe condition as your case could only be a non-serious case without prickly rash. You may only experience dry skin or flaky bit that doesn’t disappear totally.

The skincare product is usually the cause of less severe contact dermatitis, for example, cleansers, lotions, serums, body wash, makeup, toners, etc. Mild contact dermatitis occurs instantly, but it might take a long while like years before the signs of irritant contact dermatitis shows up.

When you experience an allergic condition that is traceable to a skincare product, discontinue the use immediately, or depending on the severity of your symptoms, see your dermatologist for proper diagnosis.
