Skincare Tips

Each skin needs a type of exfoliation, do you know which one is yours?

Alpha hydroxy acids can be used regularly, always followed by sun protection if applied during the day. During the first days of use, you may notice a slight tingling that is part of this exfoliation.

AHAs or alpha hydroxy acids

They are water-soluble acids (dissolve in water) and of vegetable origin, mostly from fruits. One of the best-known alpha hydroxy acids is glycolic acid, which comes from sugar cane and is the smallest, therefore it penetrates the skin better, is easier to assimilate and is the most used in cosmetics.

BHA or beta hydroxy acids

Unlike alpha-hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids are fat-soluble, that is, they dissolve in oil, which makes them an ally for oily skin, as they can penetrate clogged pores to ensure their cleansing and regulate oil production. It could be said that they act as sebum regulators, by penetrating the sebaceous glands and breaking down the dirt that clogs the pore (a mixture of dead cells, waste and sebum).

Precisely, the best known beta-hydroxy acid is salicylic acid, usually included in anti-acne treatments and comes from willow bark. Beta hydroxy acids fulfil the exfoliating function of hydroxy acids by penetrating more easily into deeper layers, unlike AHAs, which focus on exfoliating the most superficial layers. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties also stand out. In other words, this deeper exfoliation prevents the proliferation of infections and calms the skin, which is why it is the ideal acid to treat skin with acne problems. Beta hydroxy acids can also be used to treat extremely dry and calloused skin.

Although you can find AHAs and BHAs in different cosmetics, the most common and easiest way to use them is through toners or serums. You can use a toner with hydroxy acids twice a week or on alternate days with the help of a cotton pad and after cleansing the skin. If you opt for serums, thanks to their density, and more liquid than the cream, you will allow the acids to penetrate the skin more easily. Now it is up to you to choose your main hydroxy acid and if you have any kind of qualms, consult your dermatologist first to help you identify what your skin needs.
