How to choose makeup for acne

Hormonal changes, genetics, a diet too rich in sugars, stress… These are the main causes of the appearance of outbreaks in adolescents (boys and girls alike), and their persistence or reappearance in many women in adulthood.

Outbreaks are not usually welcome at any time in life. Makeup is a way to reduce the appearance of pimples and make it easier to live with the looks of others. It is also a way to resist the temptation to touch them during the day. If they are camouflaged, we are less tempted to squeeze them.

This can be done as long as you choose your makeup wisely, as the wrong makeup can make breakouts worse. This is because, for example, it can be comedogenic (that is, it favours the formation of pimples). Also, sometimes, we forget to remove our make-up and clean our sponges and brushes, where bacteria then proliferate.

Prepare your skin before applying makeup for breakouts

Clear your acne-prone skin

Cleansing the skin upon waking up is a step that should not be skipped, as it is important to get rid of the sebum produced during the night. If your skin is oily, you have a choice: micellar water or a mild, soap-free cleansing gel. Choose the formula that is most comfortable for you. If your skin is dry from dermatologist-prescribed therapy, choose a soothing cream cleanser formulated for breakout-prone skin.

Treat and hydrate breakout-prone skin

Next, apply local or targeted therapy, if you have one, or your moisturiser directly. Again, the choice of product is important and depends on your skin type. If your breakout-prone skin tends to be oily, choose a smooth, non-greasy emulsion that contains absorbent microcapsules to hydrate and mattify skin; if you are undergoing drying dermatological therapy, a nourishing and soothing cream is better. In all cases, it must be non-comedogenic and for skin with imperfections.

All that remains is to set the makeup and mattify the skin with a light layer of translucent powder. Apply it all over the face, starting at the contours and working towards the centre of the face for a lighter result and to avoid accentuating the texture of pimples. And to sculpt the face, nothing like a touch of bronzer or highlighter on the cheekbones.

But to make your makeup last longer, without adding an extra layer, spray a fine mist of thermal water on your face. And don’t forget to clean the sponge and brush well! Why? To prevent impurities left on your makeup tools from depositing on your skin and forming new pimples the next time you use them.

The right habits for makeup with acne

Not all makeup products are created equal when it comes to correcting, evening and enhancing the complexion. To cover blemishes without clogging your skin and causing new pimples to appear, it’s best to choose a medical-grade concealer that’s formulated especially for your skin type and is non-comedogenic.
